Sixth-place finish in Mountain Moonshine Classic prelim

With an unexpected storm wiping out Thursday’s Grassy Smith Memorial at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.), Ross Bailes followed the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) to Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) on Friday afternoon for the two-day Mountain Moonshine Classic. In a stout field of 45 Late Models, Bailes topped his group in time trials before placing fourth in his heat. Clawing forward one spot in the 30-lap preliminary feature, Ross recorded a sixth-place finish.

On Saturday, Ross edged his way into the $50,000-to-win Mountain Moonshine Classic with the fourth-and-final transfer spot in his heat race. Starting on the eighth row, Bailes lost one spot in the 60-lap affair to finish 17th.
