Ross Bailes notches podium finish at Cherokee Speedway
On Saturday night Ross Bailes made his lone start of the weekend at Cherokee Speedway (Gaffney, S.C.) returning behind the wheel of the Billy Hicks-owned No. 79 Longhorn Chassis Late Model. (Kevin Ritchie Photography)
In a field of 27 Ultimate Southeast Series entries, Bailes came in second fastest in qualifying behind Chris Ferguson, which positioned him second on the starting grid for the $5,000-to-win Big Chief 40. With polesitter Ferguson taking control of the lead early, Ross remained close to the leader as the pair weaved through lap-traffic. After Ferguson suffered a flat coming to the white flag, Bailes took part in a three-way battle for the lead on the final lap but came short, marking him third on the final rundown. He followed Anthony Sanders and Ben Watkins across the line with Dillon Brown and Dennis Franklin rounding out the Top-5.
