Ross Bailes opens Southern Nationals with two Top 5 finishes
Kicking off the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals, Ross Bailes headed to Smoky Mountain Speedway (Maryville, Tenn.) on Friday evening piloting the Big Frog Motorsports No. 58 Late Model. In a field of 35 cars, Ross laid down the fastest lap overall in time trials before picking up an 8-lap heat race victory. Starting on the pole for the $10,053-to-win A-Main, Bailes led first eight circuits before fading back to a fifth place finish when the checkered flag flew, trailing Chris Madden, Dale McDowell, Cory Hedgecock, and Brandon Overton across the line. On Saturday evening at Wythe Raceway (Rural Retreat, Va.), Bailes started the night off with a heat race victory, which positioned him second on the starting grid for the main event. With $10,053 on the line, Ross dropped two spots in the 53-lapper to place fourth behind Brandon Overton, Chris Madden, and Dale McDowell with Donald McIntosh coming in fifth.
With the first two events in the books, Ross is currently fourth in the Southern Nationals point standings.
