Ross Bailes
Pair of podium finishes at Screven and Cochran, sits in third in Southern Nationals point standings
For the third round of the Schaeffer’s Southern Nationals, Ross Bailes and the Big Frog Motorsports team headed to Volunteer Speedway (Bulls Gap, Tenn.) on Monday afternoon for the $3,500-to-win A-Main. With the third fastest time in his group setting him sixth on the starting grid for the 35-lap feature, Ross jumped up two spots to register a fourth place finish behind Chris Madden, Brandon Overton, and Cory Hedgecock with Logan Roberson coming in fifth. The following night at I-75 Raceway (Sweetwater, Tenn.), Bailes locked into the pole position for the main event with the fastest time in his group. With $3,500 on the line, Ross led the first seven circuits before fading late in the 35-lapper to log a 12th place finish.
After a scheduled off day on Wednesday, Ross headed to Senoia Raceway (Senoia, Ga.) on Thursday afternoon for the fifth stop of the 12-race miniseries. Drawing a stout field of 35 cars, Bailes locked his spot into the $3,500-to-win A-Main with the third fastest time in his group. After a flat left-rear tire sent him pit side on lap 27 while running in the Top 5, Bailes clawed back from the tail to register an 11th place outing.
On Friday evening at Needmore Speedway (Norman Park, Ga.), Bailes laid down the fastest lap overall in a field of 27 cars before picking up a 10-lap heat race victory. With $10,053 on the line in the feature, Ross wrestled away the top spot from Donald McIntosh on lap 11 but suffered flat right-front tire on lap 20. Coming one spot shy of a Top-5 finish from the tail, Bailes worked his way up to a sixth place spot.
For another $10,053-to-win A-Main on Saturday night at Screven Motor Speedway (Sylvania, Ga.), Ross again topped the speed charts before capturing a heat race win. Dropping two spots in the 53-lap affair, Bailes notched a third place finish behind Brandon Overton and Mark Whitener with Chris Madden and Cla Knight completing the Top-5 finishers.
On Sunday afternoon at Cochran Motor Speedway (Cochran, Ga.), Bailes locked into the pole position with the fastest time in the 21-car field. Losing the top spot to Brandon Overton on restart on the fourth lap, Ross held on to a third place finish in the remaining distance, trailing Overton and Chris Madden across the line with Michael Page and John Baker rounding out the Top-5.
Ross has climbed to third in the latest Southern Nationals point standings.
